Pure, unrelenting, magical Fashion that ranged from want-it-right-now to full-on fantasy. That’s how Jacobs likes his fashion — major. And he gives not a whit for the casualization frenzy. “I really don’t care if it’s new or old or modern or casual or dressy or whatever,” Jacobs said during a preview. “I think there are plenty of people dressing women to go to Starbucks. It’s not of interest to me. If you’re going to get dressed up, get dressed up. If you’re going to not get dressed, wear your sweats to go to Starbucks.” -

Fashion #legend Marc Jacobs

Mega. Super. Magic. These are a few words I would use to describe the autumn/winter 2018 Marc Jacobs collection. The shapes, the colours and the proportions are all strong. Those words also apply to the photo shoot we staged to present this collection. With Marc Jacobs himself present, we had famed photographer Chen Man behind the lens and three global Chinese cover girls: Xiaowen Ju, Emma Pei and Xiaoxing Li. There was nothing small or indistinct about anyone in the room or their contributions to fashion – in fact, Xiaowen was the first Chinese model to be a face for a Marc Jacobs campaign, so it was nice to be there as things came full circle.

The Park Avenue Armory was pitch dark, save for a narrow spotlit runway down its center. His label’s fortunes are down and the fashion winds are reshaping the New York hierarchy of cool, but Marc Jacobs still knows how to cast a spell. With the news earlier this month about Baja East’s John Targon being brought in to design his company’s contemporary line, tonight was Jacobs’s moment to deliver a fashion message that can’t be ignored. Underneath those spotlights we’d say he succeeded. -

Breaking with recent tradition, the Marc Jacobs show started late, as in nearly an hour-and-half late. Something about a truck of clothes stuck in traffic... The experience took us olds in the crowd back to September 2007, when Jacobs’s 9 pm show didn’t go off until 11. That season, Suzy Menkes took Jacobs to task in the IHT; this season the Brits beat hasty retreats to waiting Ubers a good 45 minutes before the first model hit the runway, to catch flights back to London. Eleven years on, fashion feels like a different business—less fun and more serious. -

The Marc Jacobs show was silent. All 56 models walked only to the sounds of their shoes on the old wood planks of the Park Avenue Armory. Then they came back out for their finale with the aria from the 1981 French film Diva as an accompaniment. There may be nothing to read into that; then again, indulge us. -

He’s not leaving. Period. End of story. An exasperated Marc Jacobs made that declaration — again — when asked if his finale music carried a message of good-bye. After his models walked the perimeter of the cavernous Park Avenue Armory in total silence, they reemerged to a piece from Alfredo Catalani’s opera “La Wally.” In part, it translates, “Ah, well, then! I shall go far away.” -
